DOGMA // ISSUE 13

The intention with Dogma has always been to take inspiration, where possible, from the club that we follow.

And so, following a summer transfer window unlike anything witnessed before, we thought it appropriate to mark the occasion with something equally luxy: beautiful ‘Stand or Fall’ inspired cover artwork that comes embellished with gold foil. Yes, gold.

Iain Budgen’s design reimagines the phrase ‘Stand or Fall’ as something contemporary and modern (more North Laine, less Volks Railway), setting the scene for a three-part editorial feature with contributions from Stefan Swift, Fred Waine and Tom Simpson. ‘Stand or Fall’ has become somewhat ubiquitous, but do we ever stop to think about why this is, where it came from, and why it continues to resonate?

The truest adage in fan culture is ‘football is nothing without cans’ – a truism celebrated with a booze inspired postcard print (from Dogma’s Andrew Forsyth), whilst Max Winchester attempts to take stock of our recent £200m summer holiday. The highest net transfer spend in the world, you’ll never sing that.

This time last year UEFA instructed Brighton to substantially disconnect themselves from USG (potentially costing us the future services of Victor Boniface). Why was this instruction issued to us (and Villa), but not this season’s Euro football participants? Is this situation connected to a worrying trend of global multi-club ownership models and the influence of the international finance sector? Dogma’s Rich reveals all.

Hamburg is a fine city and a mental night out – something we can personally attest to at Dogma, thanks to a visit earlier this summer – but it’s also the city that helped make Fabian Hurzeler, thanks to his successful stint at St. Pauli. We speak to German football expert Matthew Karagich to understand more.

Alfie Baeza-Collis asks if a manager’s matchday wardrobe selections mirror their tactical preferences or reveal how they wish their teams to play football; and Edward Woodhouse celebrates the subject of our latest mural project (Simon Adingra, on a wall next to New England House if you haven’t yet seen it) alongside an exploration into the history and motives of Simon’s former employer Right to Dream.

We examine the importance and potential impact of football films, and look back at the events of 1848 (the California gold rush) to help contextualise the likely events of 2026 and the possibility of Premier League fixtures taking place on American soil (yuk).

Fan segregation at WSL games… are you for or against this idea? Tom Hylands (plus Alice Botting and Jack Albion) share their views on this hot topic, pondering whether mixed stands are sacrosanct and something to be treasured, or if the introduction of designated home and away areas would help the development of the women’s game.

Simon Barrett reflects on the sad passing of two friends, both part of his Albion supporter group. Andrew Forsyth takes you on a tour around the barber shops of Brighton, and there’s beautiful artwork from Gullski and ThumbDeZerbi. Plus, as always, free stickers.

For this season, we have introduced a subscription offer that automatically renews year on year (on the date you first subscribed, at the price you first paid). If you wish to support a DIY, advertising free and editorially independent Brighton & Hove Albion fanzine, then the auto-renewal subscription is the best way to do it.

The auto-renewal subscription offer is only available until 6th September.

Issue 13 should be in your hands mid to late September 2024. A stacked line up of contributors, beautiful photography and artwork, THE best Albion stickers, an actual golden cover (plus a field trip to Hamburg); our summer has been as busy as the Albion’s, the greatest football club in the world, who continue to inspire us.

Where we differ in view to the Albion is our approach to proprietary ownership; you may pass your copy of Dogma to whomever you like (and you will not be held responsible for the actions of that person), with all editions of Dogma issued in a sharable physical format (photo ID checks not applicable).
